Types of Mixtures

TYPES OF MIXTURES
WEBSITE

There are four different types of mixtures; solutions, suspensions, emulsions, and colloidal dispersions.

Solutions are mixtures that are made by mixing solute and solvent. Solute is the substance in the mixture that dissolves. Solvent is the substance that makes the other thing(s) dissolve. If you know about homogeneous mixtures, solution is an example of it.

Suspensions are mixtures that are made by a solid and a liquid mixed together. In this mixture, the solid does not dissolve. Suspensions settle if they are left undisturbed. These are a type of heterogeneous mixtures.

Emulsions are a special type of suspension. This mixture is made of two liquids that do not mix at all. If left undisturbed, the different liquids will separate. It is a type of heterogeneous mixture since you can see the different parts.
Colloidal dispersions are a mixture that is in between suspensions and solutions.
Here are some examples of each different mixture that I got from a website;

Examples:
Solutions Suspensions Emulsions Colloidal dispersions
salt and water soil and water oil and vinegar liquid laundry starch and water
alcohol and water sand and water kerosene and water fine pottery clay and water
copper sulfate and water clay and water oil and water mayonnaise

  1. Fantastic notes Clare. I really like how you organized your information into a table as well as separated paragraphs.
